Castel Calahorra
La Calahorra, Spain, Spain
Castillo de La Calahorra is a pioneering Renaissance castle perched on a 1,250-meter hill in La Calahorra, Granada province, Spain, built between 1509 and 1512 atop an earlier Moorish fortress by Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar y Mendoza, illegitimate son of Cardinal Mendoza and first Marquis of Cenete. Its austere exterior with four corner towers contrasts an opulent Italianate interior featuring Carrara marble columns, elegant arches, and a grand staircase crafted by Genoese and Segovian architects, marking Spain's earliest Renaissance palace outside Italy. Used briefly as a noble residence, it sheltered Christians during the 1568-1571 Morisco Revolt, later abandoned until early 20th-century salvage by the Duke of Infantado, and now stands as a BIC-protected monument with limited guided access amid Sierra Nevada vistas.
