Castel Nuovo
Naples, Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy, Spain
Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, is a striking medieval fortress in Naples, Italy—not Spain—overlooking the Bay of Naples.
Commissioned in 1279 by Charles I of Anjou to serve as a royal residence and defensive stronghold, it features Gothic architecture with five robust cylindrical towers and a famous Renaissance triumphal arch added by Alfonso I of Aragon in the 15th century to celebrate his conquest.
Once home to luminaries like Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Giotto, who decorated its halls, the castle later housed rulers including Charles III of Bourbon before becoming a museum showcasing its rich layers of Angevin, Aragonese, and Bourbon history.
