Castell d'Alfofra
Spain, Spain
Castell d'Alfofra, also called the Castle of Confrides or El Castillo de Aljofra, is a medieval Muslim fortress located on a hilltop above the remote mountain villages of Confrides and Benifato in Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain, within the rugged Sierra de Aitana.
Dating to the 12th century as an Almohad watchtower protecting agricultural settlements during frontier conflicts, its sparse stone ruins served lookout duties before Christian conquest and repopulation under James I.
Listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural heritage site, the structure rewards intrepid hikers with panoramic vistas of dramatic valleys and peaks, embodying the isolated defensive architecture of Alicante's inland sierras.
