Castell de Cabrera
Spain, Spain
Castell de Cabrera is a 10th-century medieval fortress located in the Pla de Cabrera near the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Cabrera in L'Esquirol (Esquirol), Osona region, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain, first documented in 940 AD as the ancestral seat of the powerful Cabrera family.
Serving as a strategic hilltop stronghold during the Reconquista, it featured a circular tower base (3.5 meters diameter), defensive walls, and a barrel-vaulted cistern, defending the territory that later formed the modern municipality under lords like Gausfred de Cabrera from the early 11th century until the 19th-century abolition of feudalism.
Excavated in the early 20th century by Josep M. Pericas and again in 1972 and 2019, these well-preserved ruins—declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest—reveal medieval pottery and arrowheads, now consolidated for public access amid archaeological trails in the Cabrerès landscape.
