Castell de Carles
Alfara de Carles, Spain, Spain
Castell de Carles is a medieval castle atop a mountain in the depopulated village of Carles, Alfara de Carles municipality, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain, first documented in 1173 when Ramon Berenguer IV granted its lands to Pere de Sentmenat after Tortosa's conquest.
Controlled by the Sentmenat and later Montcada families, it received a population charter in 1237 and served as a key border stronghold until Tortosa acquired it in 1432, thriving until a 1480 epidemic led to abandonment and relocation to Alfara.
Protected under Spain's 1949 castle decree and 1985 heritage law, its ruins reflect progressive decay amid scenic terrain near the Sant Julià hermitage.
