Largely rebuilt in the 16th century under King Philip II using red sandstone from nearby quarries to counter Ottoman and Barbary pirate threats, it features a robust keep with contrasting beige plaster walls, fortified Romanesque church of Santa Maria from around 1106, curtain walls, and corner towers expanded across multiple phases through the 18th century.

Restored in the late 19th century by banker Manuel Girona with Gothic decorative elements and now a cultural center with pirate-themed exhibits, it symbolizes the town's defensive heritage amid panoramic coastal views.
