Castell de Corbera
Corbera, Spain, Spain
Castell de Corbera, a medieval fortress in Corbera, Valencia, Spain, was built in the 11th century on Roman foundations as a Muslim stronghold to control the Sierra de la Murta foothills and nearby coast.
Featuring irregular limestone walls, a distinctive "zip-lock" outer defensive ring called an albacar, an upper enclosure with lord's quarters, and a prominent 16-meter Almohad albarrana tower one of Europe's best-preserved examples - it bears Kufic inscriptions praising Allah on its structures.
Conquered by Jaime I in 1248, it was destroyed during the 1521 War of the Germanies by agermanados rebels, later abandoned despite failed rebuilds, and recently consolidated through 2022 excavations revealing Roman, Islamic, medieval, and Renaissance layers.
