Featuring concentric enclosures with an upper palace, lower albacar refuge, key gates like Portal de la Vila with horseshoe arches, and towers such as Torre del Mig and Renaissance-era Torre Roja of red sandstone, it evolved through Christian conquest in 1244, Renaissance fortifications against pirates, and Duke of Lerma's palace additions before partial ruin in the War of Spanish Succession.
