Castell de l'Alcalatén
Spain, Spain
Castell de l'Alcalatén perches on a limestone crag at 370 meters above L'Alcora in Castellón province, Valencian Community, Spain, originating as a 10th-12th century Almohad Islamic fortress strategically positioned to control the Río de l’Alcora valley.
Featuring a compact triangular plan with a citadel, crenellated walls, two prominent towers - one circular and one semicircular plus a rectangular aljibe cistern and a single southern entrance flanked by barbican towers, it underwent medieval Christian modifications after James I granted it to Ximén d'Urrea in 1233.
Partially restored and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, the site offers sweeping views of the surrounding comarca, blending Islamic mampostería construction with hiking trails that highlight its role in regional defense and repopulation history.
