Castell de Llívia
Spain, Spain
Castell de Llívia crowns Puig de Llívia hill at 1,357 meters overlooking the town of Llívia, a Spanish exclave in Girona province, Catalonia, completely surrounded by France in the Cerdanya valley.
First referenced in 996 AD with 10th-century origins possibly atop Bronze Age settlements, this strategic border fortress was expanded in the 13th century into a robust enclosure around a central courtyard, featuring a moat, high walls, and towers to counter French threats, serving as Cerdanya's primary defense through the 14th-15th centuries.
Besieged for 14 months in 1478 before capitulating to Louis XI, who ordered its demolition in 1479, the ruins underwent minor repairs and full restoration by 2013, now offering panoramic views of the Pyrenees and valley amid pine forests.
