Castell de Llordà
Spain, Spain
Castell de Llordà is an exceptional 11th-century fortified residence perched on a hilltop above Llordà village in the Conca Dellà region of Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain, constructed by the powerful lord Arnau Mir de Tost as the nerve center for conquering and repopulating Pallars Jussà during the Reconquista.
Featuring three enclosures including a triangular upper fortress with square flanking towers, a grand rectangular palace-like hall with barrel vaults and eight windows rivaling the Count of Barcelona's own residence, and lower areas housing the Sant Sadurní church plus civilian dwellings, it exemplifies rare high medieval non-religious residential architecture blending military strength with seigneurial luxury.
Donated by Counts Ermengol II and Constanza of Urgell, it endured feudal transactions until 19th-century disamortization led to abandonment, with excavations from 1997 and phased restorations through 2008 reviving this declared historic-artistic monument celebrated for its panoramic views and historical significance.
