Castell de Miralles
Spain, Spain
Castell de Miralles is a Romanesque medieval castle from the 11th century situated on a prominent summit in the now-abandoned village of Miralles, within the municipality of Tremp in Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain.
First mentioned in 837 AD, it served as the administrative center of a large valley encompassing nearby sites like Tamúrcia and Espinalba, strategically controlling communications through the Sierra de San Gervasio during intense 9th-12th century disputes among local lords, the Counts of Pallars Sobirà, and the baronies of Erill and later Miralles tied to the monastery of Santa María de Alaón.
Its remains include fragments of a square tower, exterior enclosure walls adapted to the terrain using local limestone ashlars, and ruins of the adjacent Santa Maria church, protected as cultural heritage overlooking the rugged Pallars landscape.
