Castell de Montagut
Oix, Spain, Spain
Castell de Montagut is an 11th-century medieval fortress located atop Montagut hill (612 meters) in the municipality of Montagut i Oix, Garrotxa region, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain, first documented around 1070 as "castrum de Monte Acuto quod vocant Corz" during fidelity oaths to Count Bernat II de Besalú.
Originally featuring a prominent tower and enclosure walls with a surrounding moat, it changed hands among powerful families like the viscounts of Bas, Montcada seneschals, and counts of Empúries before Crown acquisition in 1280 by Pere II, later passing to the Empúries lineage until 1339 incorporation into royal domains.
Today, its ruins—including a restored 19th-century circular tower near the Santuari del Cós, partial modern walls, and adjacent Romanesque Sant Pere church—preserve this Cultural Asset of National Interest amid scenic hiking trails in the Alta Garrotxa volcanic landscape.
