Castell de Montornés
Benicàssim, Spain, Spain
Castell de Montornés in Benicàssim, Castellón province, Valencian Community, Spain, is a 10th-century Arab fortress built atop Roman remains within the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park, strategically positioned on a steep mountain peak for defense.
Conquered by El Cid according to legend, later reinforced by Christians after James I's 1233 takeover, it features three walled enclosures forming a triangular layout with the Torre de San Vicente and Salandró house, though only wall segments, ceramic altarpieces, and watchtowers remain.
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1949, the ruins reward hikers with spectacular panoramic views of Castellón's plain and Mediterranean coast.
