Castell de Montsonís
Spain, Spain
Castell de Montsonís is a well-preserved 11th-century fortress dominating the village of Montsonís in Noguera, Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain, constructed around 1024 by Count Ermengol II of Urgell to defend against Muslim incursions along the frontier until Lleida's 1149 reconquest.
Featuring a fairy-tale exterior with large battlements, twin square entrance towers, a reconstructed keep tower after 1460 Remences War destruction, Gothic windows, arrow slits, and Renaissance elements, its interiors reveal a prison with original chains, secret cellar passage to Salgar Monastery, shield room, private chapel, bakery, and pilgrims' quarters across multiple levels.
Spain's first private castle opened to visitors, it remains inhabited by Baron Montoliu descendants who restored its medieval splendor, offering guided tours with panoramic Segre valley views from the homage tower as a protected cultural heritage site.
