Castell de Mur
Spain, Spain
Castell de Mur is an exceptional 11th-century Romanesque fortress perched atop a rocky hill in Castell de Mur, Pallars Jussà, Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain, overlooking the Tremp Basin as a prime example of early medieval civil-military architecture.
First documented in 969 AD and associated with powerful figures like Arnau Mir de Tost, it features a unique triangular enclosure with 1-meter-thick walls rising 14-18 meters, rounded corners adapted to the terrain, a single southern gateway, and a well-preserved 16-meter circular master tower divided into four floors with loopholes.
Once sheltering the abandoned medieval village of Mur and adjacent to the Santa Maria collegiate church, it symbolized control over newly reconquered Muslim frontier lands, later restored in 1986 and declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
