Castell de Polop
Polop, Spain, Spain
Castell de Polop is a 12th-century Muslim fortress perched on a hilltop dominating the town of Polop in Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain.
Built during Almohad rule to guard strategic routes and fertile lands in La Marina region, it saw conquest by James I's forces, service under knight Beltrán de Belpuig after 1271, and later revolts including Al-Azraq's uprisings and the Germanías, where materials were reused for a nearby chapel leaving mostly curtain walls, cistern, and towers amid ruins.
Once a cemetery known as Cementerio Viejo, the accessible site now rewards visitors with panoramic views of the valley, surrounding sierras, and Mediterranean coast, blending Islamic origins with medieval Christian history in a popular hiking destination.
