Evolving from a 10th-11th century military fortress with a cylindrical tower into a fortified episcopal palace through medieval expansions including a Romanesque chapel and thick enclosing walls of sandstone, it anchored defensive lines along the Llobregat valley amid feudal power shifts involving local lords like the Sanaüja family and viscounts of Cardona.

Later Baroque additions like a belfry mark its transformation, with ruins today preserving early medieval cores that highlight its strategic role in the Reconquista frontier, protected as cultural heritage.
