Castell de Santueri
Spain, Spain
Castell de Santueri is a medieval fortress atop Puig de Santueri, a 400-meter table mountain near Felanitx in southeast Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, with origins as a Roman watchtower from the 1st century BC, later expanded by Moors in the 10th century as a military base.
Captured by King Jaume I during the 1229-1231 Christian reconquest after a year-long siege—where resourceful Moors used a secret sea tunnel to evade starvation—it passed to noble families before 14th-century reconstruction focused on pirate defense, featuring massive irregular walls, fortified watchtowers, a central tower, cisterns, and cave dwellings adapted to sheer cliffs.
Loyal to the Crown during 1520s revolts, it declined after the 18th century, sold privately in 1811, and now stands as visitable ruins offering sweeping coastal views of the Levante shore and Cabrera Islands.
