Castell de Sarroca de Bellera. Ruïnes
Sarroca de Bellera, Spain, Spain
Castell de Sarroca de Bellera ruins dominate a rocky peak southeast of Sarroca de Bellera village in Pallars Jussà, Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain, first documented in 904 AD when Muslim forces under Lubb ibn Muhammad captured it from Count Ramon I of Ribagorza and Pallars during frontier raids.
Built as the core of the Bellera pagus defending the monastery of Sant Genís from the 9th century, it passed through Pallars counts like Artau II and Ramon V by 1094-1098 before the influential Bellera family emerged, controlling multiple castles including Antist and Rialb into the 14th century amid conflicts like the 1280 Balaguer siege and 1719 French invasion.
Surviving fragments include a vanished round tower base, enclosure walls, and terrace dependencies on an east-west elongated crag, marking its enduring role until strategic obsolescence by the 12th century, protected within the village's historic fabric.
