Castell de Tamarit
Tamarit, Spain, Spain
Castell de Tamarit is a medieval castle perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Tamarit, a coastal hamlet within Tarragona municipality on Spain's Costa Daurada in Catalonia.
Originating in the 11th century as a Romanesque fortress built by the lords of Claramunt, it evolved through Gothic additions and served as a key defensive site against invasions, later housing the Archbishopric of Tarragona and the Marquises of Tamarit, with a Romanesque church of Santa Maria at its core.
Destroyed during the 17th-century Harvesters' War and further ruined by Napoleonic conflicts and 19th-century decline, it was meticulously restored in 1916 by American artist Charles Deering under Catalan modernisme architect Ramón Casas, transforming it into a luxurious private estate now used for exclusive events like weddings amid lush gardens and stunning sea views.
