Castell de Verdera (Sant Salvador de Verdera)
Spain, Spain
Castell de Verdera, also known as Sant Salvador de Verdera Castle, is a medieval fortress dating back to at least 904 AD located on Montoriu mountain near El Port de la Selva in Alt Empordà, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain, forming part of the Serra de Rodes monumental complex alongside Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery.
First controlled by the Counts of Empúries before passing to the monastery amid constant disputes, it was rebuilt in the 13th century by Count Ponç IV with robust walls and structures reflecting its role defending against piracy and invasions through the 16th century.
Evolving from a 9th-11th century Romanesque stronghold to a lookout post, its ruins today offer sweeping panoramic views of the Costa Brava, Empordà plain, Pyrenees, and Gulf of Roses, accessible via hiking trails as a protected cultural heritage site.
