Castell del Remei
Penelles, Spain, Spain
Castell del Remei is a 19th-century historicist castle and winery complex in Penelles, Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain, built on ancient Roman-era foundations known historically as Choris and later a medieval tower owned by the County of Urgell and the Bishop of Solsona.
The Girona family transformed it into a fortified structure with battlements in the late 1800s, incorporating a pioneering winery modeled after Bordeaux châteaux, complete with vaults, a distillery, mill, cooperage, and smithy from Spain's major Urgell canal irrigation project.
Today, managed by winemaker Tomàs Cusiné under DO Costers del Segre, it produces fine aged wines from 140 hectares of vineyards, offers guided tours, tastings, and preserves its status as Catalonia's oldest labeled aging winery and a Cultural Asset.
