Castelo da Rocha Forte
Santiago de Compostela, Municipality of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Spain
Castelo da Rocha Forte stands as a significant medieval ruin in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, northwestern Spain, constructed around 1240 by Archbishop Xoán Arias to project ecclesiastical power, control access routes, and serve as a refuge amid local tensions.
Unlike hilltop fortresses, this valley stronghold guarded pilgrim paths and trade to the city, housing archbishops like Berenguel de Landoria during 14th-century revolts by Compostela's bourgeoisie, who burned it before reconstruction.
Destroyed to its foundations in 1467 during the Irmandiño revolts against noble abuses, the site never rebuilt and partially quarried for the cathedral undergoes archaeological excavation revealing its defensive walls, cisterns, and feudal history.
