Castelo de Doiras
Spain, Spain
Castelo de Doiras, also called Castelo da Ferrería or Torre da Ferreiría, is a well-preserved 15th-century medieval fortress in Doiras, Vilarello parish, Cervantes municipality, Lugo province, Galicia, northwestern Spain, perched at 700 meters atop a cliff overlooking the Cancelada River in the Ancares mountains.
Founded by Paio Guindós to guard the Camino de Santiago's entrance into Galicia, it features a rectangular enclosure 25 by 21 meters with 1.5-meter-thick slate walls up to eight meters high, a 14-meter-tall rectangular keep tower (10 by 8 meters), a wooden entrance door, a pointed arch inner gate, frescoed interiors, and an adjacent church formerly a family chapel.
Owned by nobles like the Counts of Grajal until 1909, later privately held and recently acquired by Cervantes Council in 2024 with restoration efforts, it holds BIC status since 1994 and is linked to local legends including a lobishome curse and a noblewoman transformed into a white deer killed by her brother.
