Castelo de San Carlos
Fisterra, Spain, Spain
Castelo de San Carlos is an 18th-century coastal fortress in Fisterra (Finisterre), A Coruña province, Galicia, northwestern Spain, built under King Carlos III around 1756-1768 as part of a defensive system for the Corcubión estuary alongside nearby castles in Cee and Corcubion.
Designed by engineers Demaur and Exaccha with an irregular shape adapting to rocky terrain, it features three oriented loopholes, thick ramparts, an inner nave, officer quarters, barracks, and a gunpowder room to protect against English and French corsairs.
Damaged during the French assault in the Peninsular War, the restored site now houses a fishing museum displaying boats, gear, salting techniques, shipwrecks, and sailor life, offering Atlantic views popular with Camino de Santiago pilgrims at the "End of the World".
