Castelo de San Felipe
Spain, Spain
Castelo de San Felipe is an 18th-century coastal fortress guarding the entrance to Ferrol's ria in Galicia, northwestern Spain, originally commissioned by Philip II in 1557 as part of the "triangle of fire" defenses alongside castles San Martiño and La Palma.
Redesigned between 1731-1775 into a neoclassical bastioned battery with cannon emplacements, thick walls, and geometric complexity ahead of its time, it repelled naval attacks including British assaults using a massive chain stretched across the estuary to trap enemy ships.
Never breached despite sieges, the well-preserved site offers panoramic bay views and now serves as a military museum highlighting Ferrol's naval heritage.
