Castelo de Sobroso
Spain, Spain
Castelo de Sobroso is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky promontory atop Mount Landín in Vilasobroso, Mondariz municipality, Pontevedra province, Galicia, Spain, at 334 meters above sea level.
First documented in the 12th century's Historia Compostelana for the 1117 siege where Queen Urraca escaped her sister Theresa via a legendary tunnel to the Tea River, it controlled vital crossroads linking southern Galicia's interior, coast, and Tui as part of defenses including Soutomaior and Fornelos towers.
Passed among noble houses like Sarmiento and Sotomayor amid Irmandiño revolts and dynastic feuds, ruined by the 17th century, it was meticulously restored from 1923 by journalist Alejo Carrera and now serves as an ethnographic museum showcasing its granite walls, 13-meter keep, residential quarters, and legends of mouras.
