Castelo de Trevejo
Trevejo, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Trevejo is a 15th-century medieval castle perched on a rocky spur in the tiny village of Trevejo, Sierra de Gata region, Cáceres province, Extremadura, Spain.
Built atop a 12th-century Moorish fortress, it passed through the hands of Alfonso VII, various military orders including the Knights Templar, and was ultimately destroyed by Napoleon's retreating army during the 19th-century Peninsular War.
The evocative ruins feature two enclosures with remnants of a five-sided keep, a small bailey once accessed by drawbridge, and nearby 16th-century church elements like a fortified bell gable and rock-carved anthropomorphic tombs, offering dramatic hilltop views amid rural isolation.
