Castelo de Vimianzo
Spain, Spain
Castelo de Vimianzo is a well-preserved 12th-13th century medieval fortress in Vimianzo, A Coruña province, Galicia, northwestern Spain, originally built by the Mariño family and later held by the powerful Moscoso Counts of Altamira.
The polygonal granite structure features four towers including a prominent keep with diamond battlements, nearly two-meter-thick walls surrounding a central courtyard, and a protective moat crossed by a drawbridge, enduring destruction during the 1467 Irmandiño revolts before reconstruction under Archbishop Alonso de Fonseca.
Now owned by A Coruña Provincial Council and hosting an ethnographic museum showcasing local crafts like lace, basketry, and pottery, it draws visitors for its historical reenactments such as the annual Asalto ao Castelo festival commemorating the peasant uprising.
