Castillo Almodovar del Rio
Almodóvar del Río, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Almodóvar del Río towers over the town of Almodóvar del Río in Córdoba province, Andalusia, Spain, on a 250-meter rocky promontory beside the Guadalquivir River, originating as an 8th-century Muslim stronghold known as Hisn al-Mudawwar.
Expanded during the Reconquista by Alfonso XI and Pedro I with Mudéjar features like gallon vaults and horseshoe arches, the fortress boasts diverse towers including the Keep, Square, Round, and Bell Tower, plus a double-walled barbican, aljibes, and a central arms square later enhanced with neogothic elements.
Falling into ruin by the 19th century, it underwent spectacular restoration from 1901-1936 under the 12th Count of Torralva and architect Adolfo Fernández Casanova, preserving its imposing silhouette as one of Spain's best-conserved castles open for guided tours.
