Castillo de Abrucena (Siglo XII)
Abrucena, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Abrucena, also called El Castillejo, is a 12th-century Almohad defensive fortress atop a small hill in Abrucena, Almería province, Andalusia, Spain, built on Roman ruins including a cistern amid a strategic route linking Granada and Almería.
This compact settlement features dry-stone Muslim walls, a solid rectangular tower to the west, a masonry tower with lime plasters to the south, and evidence of Neolithic ceramics from 7000 BC alongside Bronze Age and border defense remnants from the Moorish era.
Well-preserved as a local attraction despite Morisco revolts in the Alpujarra region, it reflects layered history from Roman military posts to Islamic fortifications surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs.
