Castillo de Alba (León)
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Alba de Tormes, often called Castillo de los Duques de Alba, is a historic castle-palace in Alba de Tormes near León province, Spain, with origins as a 12th-century watchtower built by King Ferdinand II overlooking the Tormes River.
Expanded into a full fortress by King Sancho IV in the 13th century and rebuilt by the powerful House of Alba after destructions under Henry IV, it was transformed into a Renaissance palace by Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, featuring lavish interior frescos of the Battle of Mühlberg amid a sober exterior.
Largely ruined during the Napoleonic Wars with only one Alba family-owned tower surviving, 1991 excavations revealed its former splendor as the ancestral seat of Spain's noble Alba lineage.
