Castillo de Alcala de los Gazules
Alcalá de los Gazules, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Alcalá de los Gazules is an Almohad fortress from the 12th-13th centuries overlooking the town of Alcalá de los Gazules in Cádiz province, Andalusia, Spain, built on Roman foundations as "Qalat at Yazula" by a Berber family granted the land by Granada's king. Its standout feature is the rectangular Torre del Homenaje with talud walls, multiple floors, and small brick vaults, surrounded by a now-lost muralla with albarrana towers visible in nearby streets. Used defensively until French troops destroyed it in 1811 during the Peninsular War after local resistance, the ruins were declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, preserving its frontier role amid cork oak forests.
