Castillo de Alcaraz
Alcaraz, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Alcaraz, perched on Cerro de San Cristóbal at 1,030 meters above the town of Alcaraz in Albacete province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, originated as a fortified city during the 10th-11th century caliphal period.
It served as a key strategic stronghold between the Kingdoms of Murcia, Granada, and Castilla, playing a vital role in the Christian Reconquista with its five walls and four grand gates protecting noble palaces inside. The castle met its end in 1475 when locals razed it after the Catholic Monarchs ousted its commander, Martín de Guzmán, leaving ruins that today highlight the town's medieval defensive heritage amid scenic sierras.
