Castillo de Alcuetas
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Alcuetas is a small yet striking 15th-16th century fortress-palace located in the village of Alcuetas, within Villabraz municipality in León province, Castilla y León, Spain, about five kilometers from Valencia de Don Juan.
Likely commissioned by Alfonso Enríquez de Acuña, son of the third Count of Valencia de Don Juan, and later held by his wife María Cabeza de Vaca before passing to the Marquis of Villasinda, it features a square enclosure with robust two-meter-thick walls of rolled stone and mortar, three cylindrical towers with three floors, narrow loopholes, and a surrounding moat for defense despite its low-lying position.
Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1949 with partial restorations including 2020 consolidation, its consolidated ruins preserve majestic defensive elements evoking the noble power of León's feudal era in a former Mozarabic territory.
