Castillo de Aledo
Aledo, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Aledo, located atop a hill in the village of Aledo near Totana in Spain's Murcia region, originated as an 11th-century Muslim fortress built from rammed earth to control the strategic Guadalentín Valley and key routes between eastern and southern Iberia during the Taifa period.
Captured by Christian forces under Alfonso VI in 1086 and briefly held against Almoravid sieges with aid from El Cid, it later passed to the Knights of Santiago after the 1243 Pact of Alcaraz, evolving with a prominent square keep known as the Torre del Homenaje featuring arrow slits and Gothic arches.
This well-preserved reddish structure, now a cultural landmark with panoramic Sierra Espuña views, hosted King Alfonso X who reportedly drafted legal codes there, drawing visitors to explore its underground passages and ties to the Reconquista.
