Castillo de Algar
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Algarra is a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop in the town of Algarra, Cuenca province, in Spain's Castilla-La Mancha region. Dating back to possibly the 9th or 11th century during Muslim rule, it was later rebuilt and expanded by Christians amid the Reconquista, serving as a strategic defensive site overlooking key routes and nearby farmlands. Its irregular, elongated layout adapts to the rocky terrain, featuring thick mampostería walls, a northern straight section, and a curved northwestern part, though much of the original Arab structures have vanished over time. The castle changed hands repeatedly through conflicts, including 15th-century wars, but now stands as a protected historical monument with limited surviving details on its full history.
