Castillo De Almenara
Spain, Spain
Castillo De Almenara perches on a 175-meter hill above Almenara in Castellón province, Valencian Community, Spain, originating as a 10th-century Moorish fortress built atop Roman ruins to control the strategic corridor between Castellón's coast and Valencia plains.
Captured by El Cid in 1098 after a three-month siege and later by James I in 1238, the sprawling 120-meter complex features a main upper castle, albacara enclosure with ancient mosque and cistern traces, plus flanking towers known locally as L'Agüelet and L'Agüeleta.
Open to visitors via an easy hiking path, its preserved stepped defenses and panoramic views highlight centuries of military significance from Almoravid defense through the 1521 Germanías revolt and Spanish Civil War.
