Castillo de Anguix
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Anguix, near Sayatón in Guadalajara province, Spain, is a striking example of castillo roquero architecture perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Tagus River.
First mentioned in the 10th century under Caliph Abd-al-Rahman III, it was rebuilt around 1136 by knight Martín Ordóñez on Alfonso VIII's orders to defend the frontier, later donated by his widow to the Order of Calatrava, and passed through noble hands including the Counts of Tendilla.
Damaged in civil wars and the War of the Spanish Succession, its 14th-15th century pentagonal walls and towers now stand in impressive ruins, declared a cultural asset in 1992.
