Castillo de Aracena
Aracena, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Aracena is a 13th-century medieval fortress crowning the hilltop in Aracena, Huelva province, Spain, built by the Order of the Hospital on the ruins of an earlier Muslim stronghold during the Reconquista to defend against Portuguese incursions as part of the "Banda Gallega" frontier line. Divided into a courtyard and alcázar separated by sturdy walls, it features the prominent 16-meter Torre Mayor keep, flanking towers, a well, and aljibe cistern amid Gothic-Mudéjar remnants that shaped the town's layout. Active until the early 16th century when it lost military relevance, the ruins now adjoin the Iglesia Prioral de Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor and offer panoramic Sierra de Aracena views as a protected historic site.
