Castillo de Baños de la Encina
Baños de la Encina, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Baños de la Encina, known as Burgalimar Castle, is Spain's oldest dated fortress, built in 967-968 AD under Caliph Al-Hakam II of Córdoba atop a hill in Baños de la Encina, Jaén province, Andalusia.
This Umayyad military stronghold features robust rammed-earth walls (tapial), 14 crenellated towers, a southern horseshoe-arch gate with murder holes, a cistern, and a 15th-century Christian Torre del Homenaje keep, reflecting its shift from Almohad control to definitive Castilian conquest by Ferdinand III in 1225.
A declared National Monument since 1931, its well-preserved Islamic architecture offers panoramic views and historical insight into Andalusian defenses during the Reconquista era.
