Castillo de Barcience
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Barcience is a 15th-century medieval fortress built by the Silva family, counts of Cifuentes, on a hill overlooking the village of Barcience near Maqueda in Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.
Originally a fortified site from the 11th-12th centuries under the Order of Santiago, Juan de Silva initiated its construction in the 14th century, completed by his grandson, featuring an almost square layout with a prominent square keep tower emblazoned with a rampant lion emblem, two cylindrical rear towers, two square front towers, curtain walls, a vanished moat and barbican, blending residential and defensive roles.
Equipped with 16th-century artillery, it now stands abandoned yet accessible via a pine-shaded path as a historic-artistic monument offering panoramic views.
