Castillo de Belmez
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Belmez is a medieval fortress perched on a prominent limestone outcrop dominating the town of Belmez in Córdoba province, Andalusia, Spain, with records dating back to at least 1245 though its main tower and walls were constructed in the 15th century. Originally controlled by the Córdoba Council before passing to the Order of Calatrava, it served as a key strategic point during the Reconquista, particularly in the War of Granada when Castilian cities were rallied for support against Nasrid forces. Occupied by French troops from 1810-1812 during the Peninsular War who rebuilt parts of it, locals later attempted partial destruction to deny enemies its vantage, leaving an elongated layout with six semi-cylindrical towers, thick walls, and a perpetually full well known as the "horse's hoofprint."
