Castillo de Berlanga de Duero
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Berlanga de Duero is a striking 15th-16th century fortress crowning a hill in Berlanga de Duero, Soria province, Spain, built over a 10th-century Arab alcazaba and 12th-century Christian structure commissioned by nobles Luis Tovar and María de Guzmán.
It combines a Renaissance inner castle with rectangular base, circular corner tower, Gothic-columned courtyard, and cistern alongside a 16th-century artillery fortress featuring thick 5-meter sillería walls, bastioned cubes, and casemates adapted to the rugged terrain bounded by the Escalote River and ancient muralla.
Expanded by the Dukes of Frías, it endured Napoleonic destruction in 1811 alongside the adjacent 16th-century palace, now offering guided weekend tours from the town hall amid its commanding views and layered defensive history.
