Castillo de Boltaña
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Boltaña is a small 11th-century Romanesque fortress perched on a hilltop overlooking the village of Boltaña in Huesca province, Aragon, Spain, offering sweeping views of the Ara River valley.
Originally a Muslim stronghold from the 9th-10th centuries, it was conquered by Christian forces around 941 under García Sánchez I and fortified further by Ramiro I, who entrusted it to tenente Sancho Galíndez from 1036 to 1080, playing a key role in the early Reconquista of Sobrarbe.
Featuring a triangular walled enclosure with a hexagonal keep tower base and a Lombard-style arched doorway akin to Loarre Castle, it fell into ruin by the 15th century after Aínsa's founding diminished its prominence, yet recent restorations preserve its historical essence amid the Pyrenean landscape.
