Castillo de Calanda (Ruinas)
Calanda, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Calanda, or the ruins of Calanda Castle, is a medieval fortress in the town of Calanda, Teruel province, Aragon, Spain, situated on the highest point of the urban area next to the El Pilar church.
Founded during the Muslim era and conquered by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1169 alongside nearby sites like Aguaviva and Castellote, it originally served as a defensive stronghold tied to the Order of Calatrava and later the Alagón family.
The structure was largely destroyed during the First Carlist War in 1839, leaving remnants such as parts of the outer wall, inner walls, an access ramp, and a cistern, with recent efforts focused on clearing debris, consolidating structures, and documenting its pre-Islamic layers. Today, an arch links the ruins directly to the church, preserving this historic site amid Calanda's scenic Bajo Aragón landscape.
