Castillo de Cardete
Benatae, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Cardete is a small Islamic fortress of Almoravid origin from the 11th-12th centuries in Benatae, Jaén province, Spain, within the rugged Sierra de Segura region.
It features a trapezoidal irregular enclosure about 400 square meters in size, with well-preserved walls including corner towers added later for better defense, alongside a prominent keep tower that served military, agricultural, and signaling roles in a network of rural watchposts.
Linked to the Almohad period through construction techniques and radiocarbon dating around 1026-1155, its ruins reflect the contested frontier between Christian Castile and Muslim al-Andalus until the Order of Santiago took control post-Reconquista.
