Cástillo de Cártama
Spain, Spain
Cástillo de Cártama in Cártama, Málaga province, Spain, is a hilltop fortress with Roman origins as a strategic defense overlooking the Guadalhorce River valley, later repaired and expanded by Moors in the 10th century during the Caliphate period to protect against invasions.
Rebuilt by Christians in the 15th century after the Reconquista by the Catholic Monarchs and further fortified in the 17th century, it features a rock-hewn cistern for sieges, ruined walls, and an adjacent Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios shrine restored in 2007, accessible via a steep rocky path.
Now in ruins, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside, standing as one of Málaga's few castles retaining its facade amid the historic white village.
