Castillo De Castro Caldelas
Castro Caldelas, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Castro Caldelas crowns Vila Peak in Castro Caldelas, Ourense province, Galicia, Spain, as one of the region's most emblematic fortresses, constructed between 1336 and 1343 by nobleman Pedro Fernández de Castro to defend his domains after receiving lands from King Alfonso IX, who granted the area's earliest known Galician-language charter.
The irregular polygonal structure adapts perfectly to the hilltop terrain with double defensive walls, three quadrangular towers including the prominent clock tower with its original mechanism and the rectangular northern keep featuring three stories and a terrace, battlements, arrow slits, carved crests, and an arms courtyard, later evolving from a military stronghold into a 16th-century palatial residence with grand halls and parladoiros windows.
Partially destroyed during the 1467-1469 Irmandiño revolts yet rebuilt under the Counts of Lemos later tied to the House of Alba - it now houses an ethnographic museum showcasing local heritage amid stunning Ribeira Sacra panoramas, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1949.
